NEW YORK:
Dr. Shakhir Mukhi, President AFMI, Founding Member of Nargis Dutt Foundation and a leading physician of New York area who was popular among Indian Americans died after a brief illness in New York Feb 7.

A charming personality who was associated with several charitable and professional associations and worked closely with several Indian associations on issues affecting the community, Dr Mukhi helped the needy irrespective of cast or religion.

His last rites – Namaz-e-Janaza -was held in Queens and the mortal remains were buried in Orlando Florida. Dr. Shakir Mukhi was an important leader of AFMI who was always concerned with the plight of underprivileged masses in India.

His contributions are many and he will sorely be missed by one and all. May Allah (swt) grant him maghfirah and give perseverance to his family,” said Dr. A.R.Nakadar (AFMI’s founding trustee). Current president of AFMI Dr. Husain Nagamia described Dr. Mukhi “a great selfless and a generous benefactor of the community.”

“He has been an ardent supporter of AFMI and had contributed to all its functions generously.. His congenial and pleasant personality always brought cheer to any gathering. He will be very much missed. May Allah SWT grant him a place in Jannat-ul- Firdaws and grant his family Sabre-Jameel to bear this irreparable loss, “added Dr. Nagamia.

A philanthropist to the core Dr. Mukhi was an active participant in AFMI’s educational mission in addition to various other charitable and community activities. He served as the executive VP of Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation, VP of Indian National Overseas Congress, and board member of AAPI for Asian communities.

He was a Human Rights Commissioner for Nassau County Long Island since 2001. A graduate of M.P. Shah Medical College, Jamnagar, he has been serving the Long Island and Queens’s communities for the past several years as a Family Physician.

He completed his residency training from Catholic Medical Center Hospital in Family Medicine, Queens NY. He was popular among his patients for his compassion and kindness. The Federation of Indian Associations (Tri-state) has mourned the death of Dr Mukhi. In a condolence message Ankur Vaidya, President of FIA (Tri-state) said FIA mourn the loss of one of FIA’s beloved Dr Shakir Mukhi, a well known philanthropist and a revered community leader.
